Lucy the Labradoodle lives on the shores of beautiful Joslin Lake in Unadilla, Michigan, and she loves to swim. Lucy’s parents, David and Kathy Downey, enjoy watching their young dog leap into the water, but they worried that she may swim too far away from their home. They needed a solution that would allow Lucy the freedom to enjoy the water while also giving them the peace of mind that she will stay close to home.

A Seattle pig named Amy made headlines recently after becoming the star pupil of a dog obedience class, perfecting her “sit” and “heel” commands alongside a Poodle, a Chihuahua, a Corgi and the rest of her canine classmates. According to her owner Lori Stock, the six month-old miniature pig “only has to be instructed a couple of times before learning something new…There’s nothing I can’t teach her.”

Dogs need time outdoors. They like to be outside where they can run and do things that dogs do, such as follow scent trails. But unfortunately, scent trails don’t end where your yard ends and a dog won’t automatically stop running at the end of your driveway.

Much of what makes our modern technology work is invisible. Our cell phones, televisions, and computers receive images and sounds through the air. GPS talks to satellites and tells us where we are, and our printers whir into motion, no strings attached. The invisibility of the workings of technology makes it all a little mysterious; some people even find it scary; our ancestors would have called it “magic.”

Seeing a happy, healthy dog playing in his own yard without a tether and without constant supervision is a joy to a dog lover, and frequently leads to a friendly chat with that well-behaved dog’s owner. More often than not, the impressed observer learns that there is an underground pet fence installed around the yard’s perimeter and the dog has been trained to respect that boundary.
