DIY Fence FAQs
- My DogWatch Transmitter is beeping. What should I do?
If your hidden fence boundary loop wire breaks or the signal is interrupted, your DogWatch T12 Transmitter will emit an audible warning sound. If this happens, you should check around your property for a visible wire break.
Here are a few tips for identifying and repairing wire breaks:
- Some wire breaks may be visible above the ground, such as when a snow plow pulls up a piece of wire at the edge of a driveway.
- If the break is not immediately visible, try looking at potential trouble spots like gardens that have been recently landscaped or areas where critters have been known to dig or chew.
- If you still cannot spot the break, try using an underground wire locator tool, available for purchase at home improvement stores or on Amazon.
- After you locate the wire break, you will need to repair it using wire that is rated for underground burial and a waterproof splice. (The DogWatch DIY Hidden Fence System uses 16 gauge wire.)
- Some DogWatch Dealers have patch kits with wire and splices available for purchase. Give them a call to ask about their DIY repair options.

- How do I replace the battery on my DogWatch DIY Fence receiver collar?
When the status light on your dog’s receiver collar changes from the normal blinking “green” every 40 seconds to blinking “red” every 10 seconds, it’s time to change the battery.
R12 Receiver: The R12 receiver is powered by a 3.6 volt lithium battery. The receiver is designed for a battery life of up to two years. The positive (+) end of the battery must be inserted down. For more detailed instructions, click here to view our How-To Video.
R12mini Receiver: The R12mini receiver is powered by a 3 volt (1/3 N) lithium battery. The receiver is designed for a battery life of up to 6 months. The negative (-) end of the battery must be inserted down. For more detailed instructions, click here to view our How-To Video.
- How do I adjust the training level on my DogWatch DIY Fence receiver collar?
Your receiver provides 4 training levels plus an audible only setting. Select the appropriate level for your pet, always starting at the lowest training level.
Important: Never change the receiver Training Levels when your dog is wearing the collar.
If you need to change the training level on the receiver, take it off your dog’s neck first, then hold the magnet on your Multi-Tool to the training level adjustment location on the side of the receiver.
- If you have an R12mini receiver, the adjustment location is indicated by a small, rounded indentation on the side of the receiver.
- If you have an R12 receiver, the adjustment location is indicated by two perpendicular vertical lines on the side of the receiver.
Hold the Multi-Tool magnet steady to that location and you will hear a series of beeps that indicate the current training level.
The “Audible Only” level is one long beep, Level 1 is one short beep, Level 2 is two short beeps, Level 3 is three short beeps, etc. The training level will continue to advance while the magnet is held in position. When you reach the desired setting, pull the magnet away from the receiver. The receiver is now set.
For more detailed instructions, view our How-To Videos for the R12mini and R12 receivers. If you have any questions about selecting the appropriate training level for your pet, contact DogWatch Customer Service or reach out to your local DogWatch Dealer.
- How do I properly fit my pet’s DogWatch receiver collar?
The DogWatch receiver collar should be worn snugly on the dog’s neck. If the collar is too loose, your dog may not receive the correct warning if they enter the Avoidance Zone.
To test if your dog’s collar fits correctly, place your finger between the collar clasp and the back of your dog’s neck. If you can easily slide your hand in between the collar and your dog’s neck, the collar is too loose. If your finger fits snugly but comfortably, the collar fit is correct.
Should you need to adjust the collar fit, remember to first remove it from your dog’s neck.
Important: We strongly recommend that you remove your dog’s receiver collar daily when not in use.
- My dog is getting out of the containment area? What do I do?
If your dog is no longer staying inside the hidden fence boundary, we recommend running through the troubleshooting checklist below. The first two listed items account for roughly 90% of all incidents, so we recommend starting there.
- Is your dog’s receiver collar too loose?
- Does the battery in the receiver collar need to be replaced?
- Did you and your dog complete all six phases of the PetFriendly™ Containment Training?
- Is the receiver collar operating properly?
- Is the Transmitter on and adjusted properly?
- Is the signal field too narrow?
- Is the correction level too low?
- Is the boundary wire unplugged?
- Is the boundary wire broken?
